Best Toddler Water Bottle: THERMOS vs Owala vs Zak Bluey

Finding the best toddler water bottle can be surprisingly difficult. It needs to be easy for little hands to hold, leak-resistant, durable enough for daycare, and simple enough for parents to clean.

We’ve tried several kids’ water bottles with our 3-year-old, including the THERMOS FUNTAINER, Owala, and Zak Designs Bluey water bottle.

After using all three, here’s my honest comparison from a toddler-mom perspective.

THERMOS FUNTAINER 12oz – Best for Toddlers

The THERMOS FUNTAINER is probably the most toddler-friendly option of the three.

The size and design are easy for little hands to manage, and the built-in straw makes drinking simple. The handle is also helpful when your child is still learning to carry their own bottle.

For daycare, preschool, and everyday outings, this is the one I would consider first.

Best for: Toddlers, daycare, preschool, and everyday use.

Pros

  • Easy for small hands to hold
  • Toddler-friendly straw design
  • Insulated stainless steel
  • Great for daycare and preschool
  • The silicone mouthpiece and plastic straw can be replaced
  • Lots of fun colors and designs

Cons

  • The silicone mouthpiece seemed to retain a slight dish soap smell over time.
  • May feel a little too “toddler-ish” as kids get older
  • If your child drinks while eating, food particles from their mouth can easily get back into the bottle through the straw.

2. Owala FreeSip Kids 16oz – Best for Growing Kids

My son saw a friend using Owala at daycare and wanted one, so we decided to switch from THERMOS.
I was also starting to feel like the silicone mouthpiece on the THERMOS was retaining a slight dish soap smell, so it felt like a good time to try something new.

As a Stanley straw-tumbler user, I honestly wondered, “Why do kids want to use this heavy bottle like a cup?” 😂
But my son simply put his mouth on the Owala and started drinking.

I asked, “Isn’t it hard to drink?”
He said, “No, I already drank it.” 😂

Turns out, he could sip from it almost like a straw.
Now I finally understand the Owala hype! 😂

Best for: Kids who are ready for a more grown-up water bottle.

Pros

  • Stylish design
  • Stainless steel
  • Excellent for cold drinks
  • Great for school and family outings

Cons

  • May be slightly less intuitive for younger toddlers
  • The silicone seal inside the lid is difficult to remove and requires a tool for cleaning.
  • The plastic drinking spout can scratch easily. My 3-year-old has already left a few bite marks on it.

3. Zak Designs Bluey 16oz– Best for Bluey Fans 💙

IMy son has loved Bluey since he was little, so we’ve gone through about four of these bottles since he was one.

At the time, he wasn’t in daycare yet, and we were looking for something easy to use at home. This bottle worked really well for us overall.

The only downside? It’s a little difficult to take apart for cleaning.

There were even times when my husband washed it without removing the drinking spout from the lid… 😂

Other than that, we’ve been pretty happy with it!

Best for: Toddlers who love Bluey and other character designs.

Pros

  • Fun Bluey design
  • Toddler-friendly
  • Easy-to-use straw
  • Kids are more excited to use it

Cons

  • Character designs may not appeal to every child
  • The drinking spout is difficult to remove from the lid for cleaning.
  • May eventually need to be replaced as your child grows
  • If your child drinks while eating, food particles from their mouth can easily get back into the bottle through the straw.

So, Which Toddler Water Bottle Is Best?

If I had to choose based on different situations:

🏆 Best Overall for Toddlers: THERMOS FUNTAINER

🎒 Best for Daycare & Preschool: THERMOS FUNTAINER

🧊 Best for Growing Kids: Owala

💙 Best for Bluey Fans: Zak Designs Bluey

For a 3-year-old, I would personally lean toward the THERMOS FUNTAINER if the priority is ease of use and daycare.

But if your child is already comfortable with a more grown-up bottle, Owala is a great option that they can continue using as they get older.

And if your little one is obsessed with Bluey… well, sometimes the cutest bottle wins. 💙😂
